Here we rate the top 10 hotel chains, and see what they are doing to become more eco-friendly. 10. Wyndham - A moderate to upscale brand of hotel and resort properties. Wyndham has programs that include monitoring and reducing energy consumption with energy efficient bulbs or sensors and other green technology; reducing water consumption with low flow taps, shower head and toilets and an ozone laundry system; recycling; eco friendly purchasing; community programs; and in house green champions and training. 9. Days Inn - Days Inn properties are aimed at price conscious business and leisure travelers. All Days Inns have towel programs, compact florescent light bulbs, public areas and in-room recycling, and is tracking energy consumption. 8. Park Inn - Parks Inns are found worldwide. Each hotel has about 160 rooms and markets itself to mid-range travelers. They have had environmental programs since 1996. Each property tracks energy use, water use, emissions, land use and biodiversity. Park Inn's have won eco awards or recognition in the UK, Germany, and The Middle East. 7. J.W. Marriott - The most elegant and luxurious of all the Marriott properties. They have replaced their plastic key card with ones made of recycled materials. Other changes include using synthetic pillows, BIC Ecolutions pens made from pre-consumer recycled plastic, and having painters use low Volatile Organic Compounds paint. 6. Premier Inn - Premier has over 500 hotels across the UK, and more to come in India and Dubai. They claim to have "Britain's greenest hotel", the Premier Inn at Tamworth, Staffordshire. Their hotels use the earth's natural energy to cool and heat rooms and provide hot water with ground heat pumps. Staff are trained to help minimize everyday energy and water consumption, such as in washing, water usage, excessive heating or cooling. Guests can see the energy saved in a visual display in the lobby. 5. Novotel - Novotel owns or manages hotels from budget to luxury. They have pledged to achieve Green Globe international environmental certification for its entire network by 2010. Novotel is big on conserving water and recycling waste water. 4. Holiday Inn - Being a large company, Holiday Inn and its parent company International Hotels Group acknowledge it has a big responsibility to make a difference and says it is "aiming to make a night with IHG more carbon efficient". They aim to enable every hotel to measure its usage of energy and water, waste produced, and carbon emissions, and then compare itself with other similar hotels. They have also launched its "Innovation Hotel", an online example of what future hotels might look like if they used green technologies, and invites feedback and ideas from visitors. 3. Travelodge - Maybe a surprise here, as Travelodge is about as budget minded as a hotel brand can get. The fact is Travelodge appointed its first Director of Environment and Sustainability in summer 2007, and hasn't looked back. All staff members are educated on environmental concerns. Major research is ongoing in using new technologies to reduce energy usage in hotels such as sustainable construction techniques, solar power, underground heating and wind power to reduce the company's carbon footprint. 2. Doubletree - You may know Doubletree because of the tasty, warm chocolate chip cookies you receive at check-in. But they strive to do things the right way for our environment as well. They had an initiative introduced in Europe in 2006 under the banner "We Care", spreading the word witha "green box" sent to all hotels containing information and training materials. An updated version was distributed two years later to all their properties. 1. Hilton will tell anyone who will listen they are the industry leader in environmental management. For over a decade it has worked towards environmental sustainability. According to its websites it aimed in 2006 to reduce energy consumption by 5%; in 2007 to reduce energy and water consumption by 10%; in 2008 to target chemicals, reduce energy consumption by 15% and water consumption by 10% - all compared with 2005 levels. The 2009 target? Waste, chemicals, energy & water. Hilton is not only concerned with themselves, they encourage their suppliers to improve their environmental performance as well.
